Annual reports, 1871-1874 [state publication].

These reports are presented to the Governor in narrative form illustrated by tabular financial statements. Included are examinations of the "fiscal departments of the state": the State Treasurer, State Auditor, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Commissioners also give their recommendations, and one report contains many italics, exclamation points, and an expletive (Alas) in its vivid examples of the handling of county accounts by the late Superintendent of Public Instruction. The annual reports continue in succeeding governmental units: Accountant to Examine and Audit the Accounts of Various State Offices (1883-1885), Examiner of Public Accounts (1885-1911), Examiners of Public Accounts (1911-1919), Office of State Comptroller (1932-1939), and the Department of Finance (1939-1947). The content of the reports is similar, but the more recent reports contain more statistical information and less narrative detail.
